Local Sights

The property is ideally situated for exploring the eastern end of the island. In general, this is a great place for activities such as mountaineering, hill walking, rambling and trips to the nearby villages, where you can sample authentic Cretan cuisine. As for swimming, the limpid waters of the south mediterranean sea stay warm right into November! Just 1km from the cottages, the fishing village of Makrys Gialos offers a wide choice of tavernas and shops, as well as a wonderful, clean sandy beach with shallow waters, where you can enjoy water sports.

The pristine beaches in the area are ideal for getting away from it all, and are easily accessible by car or motorbike. Other sights nearby include the traditional villages of Lithines and Pefki, the impressive Pervolakia Gorge, historic Kapsa Monastery, the Dei Mezzo villa at Etia (the only Venetian villa in Eastern Crete), the ruined medieval village of Voila and several frescoed Byzantine churches. 

Alternatively, take the boat from Makrys Gialos harbour on a wonderful one-day trip full of sun and sea to the small island of Koufonisi, where the ruins of an ancient Roman theatre still stand. The island was also the site of workshops for processing the sea snails used to make royal purple, a costly clothing dye.

Another magical island accessible from Ieraptera is Chryssi (Gaidouronisi or “Donkey Island”), with its shimmering white sand and emerald waters.
